The sons of God stood before Adonai, and the adversary came among them. Adonai spoke of Iyov, who still held to his integrity although he had been harmed without cause. The adversary claimed that if Iyov’s own body were struck, he would turn against God. Adonai allowed him to afflict Iyov, but forbade him to take his life.
Iyov was struck with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. He sat among the ashes and took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself. His wife asked why he still held to his integrity and told him to curse God and die.
Iyov answered that she was speaking like a foolish woman. He asked whether they should receive only good from God and not also hardship. The passage ends by saying that, through all this, Iyov did not sin with his lips.
